Know which fall-protection rule applies to your job site
- United States: federal OSHA requires fall protection at 6 ft in construction (29 CFR 1926.501), including residential. About 22+ states run their own OSHA-approved state plans that must be at least as strict — California lowered its residential trigger to 6 ft from 15 ft effective July 1, 2025.
- Canada: fall protection is regulated provincially. Most provinces trigger at 3 metres (~10 ft). Alberta adds a 1.2 m guardrail rule for permanent work areas; BC requires a written plan at 7.5 m+; Ontario mandates Working at Heights training and a 2.4 m threshold in some situations.
