How the pitch multiplier works
Roofing materials cover the sloped surface of your roof, but blueprints and aerial maps show the flat footprint. The pitch multiplier converts between them using trigonometry: for a 6/12 roof, every 12 inches of run rises 6 inches, making the slope surface 1.118× longer than the horizontal run.
Multiply your footprint area by the multiplier to get true surface area, then divide by 100 to convert to roofing squares — the unit suppliers price shingles in. Example: a 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 = 2,236 sq ft of surface = 22.36 squares ≈ 68 bundles before waste.
