How to calculate roofing squares
A roofing square — or square of shingles — is 100 square feet of roof surface. To get your square count, measure the roof's total surface area in square feet (or convert the building footprint with a pitch multiplier), then divide by 100:
Squares = roof surface area (sq ft) ÷ 100
Example: a 2,450 sq ft roof is 24.5 squares, and at 3 bundles per square that's roughly 74 bundles before waste. For a 6/12 roof, divide the footprint by the slope factor first or calculate your pitch multiplier to convert footprint square footage into true surface squares. This calculator uses that square count to estimate the full material order.
Why the waste factor matters more than the square count
A 25-square gable roof and a 25-square cut-up hip roof need very different material orders. Valleys force shingles to be cut and discarded; dormers break runs; hips consume ridge caps. Industry starting points are often 10% for simple gables, 15% for typical hip-and-valley roofs, and 20% for complex cut-up roofs. Treat those as editable assumptions, not rules; layout and manufacturer instructions control the final order.
